★★★★★4.8· thousands of reviews

Our natural canvas tote bags are crafted from heavyweight 10oz cotton canvas, giving you a blank surface ready for painting, embroidery, heat transfer vinyl, or screen printing. The medium size measures 14" wide by 15" tall with a 3" gusset, offering plenty of room for groceries, art supplies, or everyday essentials.

We designed these totes with reinforced stitching at the handles and base seams so they hold up to repeated use and washing. The natural off-white tone takes fabric paint, markers, and dye beautifully, making them a go-to choice for personalized gifts, bridal party favors, or classroom craft sessions.

Canvas weight & durability

All three sizes in our canvas tote collection use 10oz cotton canvas, a mid-weight fabric that balances structure with flexibility. The weave is tight enough to hold paint and prevent bleed-through, yet soft enough to fold flat for storage or shipping.

Reinforced stitching runs along every handle attachment point and base seam. We double-stitch these high-stress zones because personalized totes often get heavier use than store-bought bags – you’re loading them with books for a book club giveaway or groceries after a farmer’s market booth. The flat-bottom gusset on each size keeps the bag standing upright when you set it down, which is especially helpful when you’re loading or unloading items at events.

Painting & decorating techniques

The natural off-white tone of our Joann’s canvas tote bags works with every major decoration method. For fabric painting, we recommend inserting a piece of cardboard inside the tote to prevent paint seeping through to the back panel. Acrylic fabric paint adheres well; heat-set it with an iron on medium heat for permanence.

Heat transfer vinyl & iron-ons

Heat transfer vinyl (HTV) is one of the most popular techniques for bulk personalization. Preheat your iron or heat press to the vinyl manufacturer’s recommended temperature – usually 305–320°F for standard HTV. Press for 10–15 seconds, peel the carrier sheet while warm, then press again for five seconds through parchment paper. The canvas texture grips the adhesive well, and designs survive repeated washing when applied correctly.

Sizing guide & uses

The mini 8″ × 8″ tote is sized for kids’ art projects, party favors, or sample bags at trade shows. It holds a small notebook, snacks, or a potted succulent, and the short handles make it easy for children to carry. Teachers often order these in bulk for classroom craft days or end-of-year gifts.

Our medium 14″ × 15″ tote is the most versatile – large enough for a laptop, textbooks, or a week’s worth of groceries, but not so big that it overwhelms smaller frames. Event planners use it for welcome bags, bridesmaids’ gifts, or conference swag. The 3″ gusset gives it structure when loaded but lets it fold nearly flat when empty.

Perfect weight for painting projects
I bought a dozen medium totes for my daughter's birthday party, and we set up a painting station. The canvas took acrylic paint beautifully with no bleed-through when I put cardboard inside. After heat-setting, the designs survived the wash. Great quality for the price.

Holds up to daily grocery runs
I've been using the large zippered tote for weekly grocery shopping for six months now. The handles haven't stretched, the seams are intact, and the zipper pocket keeps my phone safe. I decorated mine with iron-on vinyl, and it still looks sharp.

Mini totes are adorable party favors
We ordered 30 mini canvas totes for a bridal shower. Guests decorated them with fabric markers and took them home. The size is perfect for small gifts, and the quality is way better than the cheap poly bags I've seen elsewhere.

Great for embroidery, a little stiff at first
I hand-embroidered monograms on four medium totes as bridesmaids' gifts. The canvas is thick enough that I didn't need stabilizer, but it was a bit stiff before the first wash. After laundering, they softened up and still held the stitching perfectly.

Teachers love these for classroom projects
I'm an elementary art teacher, and I order these every year for our end-of-year craft day. Kids paint them with tempera or fabric paint, and parents report they hold up to repeated use. The flat bottom keeps them standing while the paint dries.

Good to know

Canvas tote bag questions

Yes, heat transfer vinyl cut on a Cricut, Silhouette, or other electronic cutter works perfectly with our canvas totes. Set your blade depth according to the vinyl manufacturer's instructions, weed the excess, then apply with a heat press or household iron at 305–320°F for 10–15 seconds. The canvas texture grips HTV adhesive well, and designs hold through repeated washing when heat-set correctly.

The medium tote measures 14" wide by 15" tall with a 3" gusset and has no interior pockets – it's ideal for everyday errands, books, or groceries. The large tote measures 18" wide by 16" tall with a 4" gusset and includes an interior zippered pocket for keys, phone, or wallet. Both use the same 10oz cotton canvas and reinforced stitching, so the choice comes down to capacity and whether you need the secure pocket.

Cotton canvas can shrink slightly in hot water or a hot dryer. We recommend washing in cold water on a gentle cycle and air drying to maintain the original dimensions. If you do use a dryer, tumble on low heat and remove while still slightly damp. In our testing, air-dried bags showed less than 1% shrinkage, while high-heat drying caused up to 3–5% shrinkage in both width and height.

Yes, the natural off-white canvas accepts fiber-reactive dyes like Rit or Procion. For even color, pre-wash the tote to remove any sizing, then follow the dye manufacturer's instructions for cotton fabric. You can also use a diluted bleach solution to create tie-dye or ombré effects, but test a small area first and rinse thoroughly. Always wash dyed or bleached totes separately for the first few cycles to prevent color transfer.

Absolutely. The 10oz cotton canvas has a tight, even weave that works well with water-based or plastisol screen-printing inks. Insert a piece of cardboard or a screen-printing platen inside the tote to keep the ink from bleeding through to the back. Cure the ink according to the manufacturer's temperature and time guidelines – typically 320°F for one to two minutes for water-based inks. Many customers use these totes for small-batch merchandise or event giveaways.

The medium tote's reinforced stitching and 10oz canvas construction comfortably hold 15–20 pounds of evenly distributed weight – roughly equivalent to a full grocery bag or a laptop plus textbooks. We've stress-tested the handle seams to 25 pounds before seeing any stretching. For heavier or bulkier loads, the large zippered tote with its wider base and longer handles distributes weight more comfortably across your shoulder.

We sell blank canvas totes so you can personalize them yourself with paint, vinyl, embroidery, or screen printing. If you need professionally printed totes in bulk, our in-store custom design services can help you arrange third-party printing, or you can use our blank totes as a base for DIY decoration. Many event planners prefer the DIY route because it offers more creative control and often costs less than minimum-order custom printing.
