Choosing the Right Vinyl for Your Cricut Project

Permanent vinyl is the workhorse for outdoor decals, personalized drinkware, and anything that needs to survive weather or repeated washing. Its aggressive adhesive bonds to glass, metal, and sealed wood, forming a waterproof seal that holds through dishwasher cycles and sun exposure.

Removable vinyl is designed for walls, windows, and temporary signage—anywhere you want clean removal without paint damage. The low-tack adhesive repositions during the first few minutes of application, which is helpful for aligning multi-piece designs or large wall quotes.

Cutting Settings & Mat Compatibility

All Joann’s Cricut vinyl works with Cricut Explore Air 2, Maker, Maker 3, and Joy machines. In Cricut Design Space, select the material setting that matches your vinyl type—’Premium Vinyl – Permanent’ or ‘Vinyl – Removable’—and the machine will auto-adjust blade depth and pressure.

StandardGrip vs. StrongGrip Mats

Permanent and removable vinyl adhere well to StandardGrip mats. For specialty films like holographic or glitter vinyl, upgrade to a StrongGrip mat to prevent shifting during intricate cuts. Always place the vinyl shiny-side-up (liner side down) on the mat, and load the mat with the guide arrows aligned to the machine’s rollers.

Styling

Application Tips: Transfer Tape & Surface Prep

Before applying any vinyl, clean the target surface with rubbing alcohol to remove oils, dust, and residues. Even fingerprints can interfere with adhesion, so wipe down the entire area and let it dry completely.

After weeding your design, cover it with transfer tape and burnish firmly with a scraper tool. Peel the backing away slowly at a 45-degree angle—if any part of the design lifts with the backing, lay it back down and burnish again. Once the vinyl is on the transfer tape, position it on your project surface, burnish a second time from the center outward to eliminate air bubbles, then peel away the transfer tape.

Cuts perfectly every time
I’ve tried other brands and always come back to Cricut vinyl from Joann. The weeding is so much easier, and my Maker cuts intricate fonts without any tearing. I made 20 personalized water bottles for my daughter’s soccer team, and every decal applied flawlessly.

Removable vinyl saved my rental deposit
We decorated our apartment nursery with wall quotes and animal decals using the removable vinyl. Two years later, everything peeled off in one piece with zero paint damage. Landlord didn’t even notice we’d had decals up.

Holographic finish is stunning
I used the holographic sparkle vinyl on car window decals for my small business. The rainbow effect in sunlight is incredible—way more eye-catching than plain vinyl. It’s been on my vehicle for eight months through car washes and highway driving with no peeling.

Great color selection in store
Joann always has the full Cricut color range in stock, which is hard to find elsewhere. I grabbed six colors for a layered sign project, and the hues matched perfectly between permanent and removable lines so I could test layouts before committing.

Transfer tape makes application foolproof
I was nervous about centering a three-layer monogram on a tumbler, but the StrongGrip transfer tape held every tiny letter in place. The grid lines helped me align everything, and it released cleanly once I burnished it down. No bubbles, no shifting.

Dishwasher-safe after curing
I hand-washed my vinyl mugs for the first week, then started putting them in the dishwasher top rack. Six months later, the designs still look brand new—no fading, peeling, or edge lift. The permanent vinyl really does live up to the name.

Good to know

Common Questions About Cricut Vinyl at Joann

Permanent vinyl uses a strong adhesive designed for outdoor use, dishwasher-safe projects, and surfaces you don’t plan to remove it from—like mugs, car decals, and signs. It bonds aggressively and is waterproof and UV-resistant.

Removable vinyl has a low-tack adhesive that lifts cleanly from walls, windows, and smooth painted surfaces without leaving residue or damaging the finish. It’s ideal for temporary decor, event signage, and repositionable designs. Both types cut beautifully on all Cricut machines, but only permanent vinyl is rated for outdoor and high-moisture environments.

Yes. Use permanent vinyl for any drinkware that will be washed or exposed to moisture. After applying the vinyl and removing the transfer tape, let the tumbler cure for 72 hours before the first wash. Once cured, permanent vinyl is dishwasher-safe on the top rack, though hand-washing extends its lifespan.

For best results, clean the tumbler with rubbing alcohol before application to remove oils and ensure a strong bond. Avoid using removable vinyl on drinkware—it’s not waterproof and will peel off quickly.

Transfer tape is essential for multi-piece designs, intricate cuts, and any project where precise placement matters. It holds your weeded design together and lets you position it accurately before burnishing it onto the final surface.

For very simple single-piece decals—like a solid circle or basic shape with no interior cutouts—you can sometimes apply the vinyl directly by peeling it from the backing. However, most projects benefit from transfer tape, especially anything with small letters, layered colors, or detailed graphics.

All Cricut vinyl sold at Joann works with Cricut Explore Air 2, Explore 3, Maker, Maker 3, and Joy machines. For the Joy, we also carry Smart Vinyl in 5.5-inch rolls that cut without a mat.

In Cricut Design Space, select the material setting that matches your vinyl type—’Premium Vinyl – Permanent’ or ‘Vinyl – Removable’—and the machine will adjust blade depth and pressure automatically. Specialty finishes like holographic or glitter may require a deep-point blade for the cleanest cuts.

Permanent vinyl from Joann is rated for 3–5 years of outdoor durability when applied correctly. It resists rain, snow, sun exposure, and temperature fluctuations without fading or peeling.

For maximum longevity, apply vinyl to clean, smooth surfaces and allow it to cure for 72 hours before exposing it to harsh weather. Avoid applying vinyl in freezing temperatures or direct sunlight, as extreme heat or cold can interfere with initial adhesion.

Absolutely. Layering is a popular technique for creating multi-color designs without printing. Cut each color separately, weed the negative space, and apply one layer at a time using transfer tape.

Start with the bottom layer and work upward, allowing each layer to adhere fully before adding the next. Permanent and removable vinyl can be layered together, though we recommend using all permanent or all removable within a single project for consistent adhesion and longevity.

Permanent vinyl bonds well to glass, metal, sealed wood, hard plastic, ceramic, and smooth painted surfaces. It’s ideal for mugs, car windows, signs, laptops, and outdoor decor.

Removable vinyl works best on smooth interior walls, windows, mirrors, and any surface you plan to remove it from later. Avoid textured walls, unsealed wood, or fabric—vinyl needs a smooth, non-porous surface for proper adhesion. For curved surfaces like tumblers or helmets, use a heat gun on low to gently warm the vinyl as you smooth it around contours.
